An exceptional group of 19th-century photographs from an important European collection spearheads our spring sale. All the leading masters of the period are represented with high quality prints, such as an extremely rich salt paper print of The Fruit Sellers, 1842 by Henry Fox Talbot, Nadar’s Hermaphrodite, 1860 and Beatrice, a large-size albumen print by the great portraitist Julia Margaret Cameron, from 1870.
The historic section is further enforced by a myriad of exquisite daguerreotypes. Particularly noteworthy are seven previously unknown views of Alger dating from 1844 and four full plate daguerreotypes by the early practitioners Charles-Marie-Isidore Choiselat and Stanislas Ratel.
Following the “vintage” section of works including those by Man Ray, Laure-Albin Guillot, Raoul Ubac and Hans Bellmer, a strong accent will be placed on fashion and contemporary photography including pieces from three distinguished European collections.
Iconic photographs by Horst P. Horst, FC Gundlach, Herb Ritts, Helmut Newton and Robert Mapplethorpe are followed by more recent works by Andres Serrano, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Elger Esser, Massimo Vitali, Nan Goldin, Roland Fischer, Guido Mocafico and Vik Muniz, as well as a sublime seascape by Richard Misrach.
