Woman in Heat is opening in the Russian capital MOSCOW!
The Vernissage will take place on February 12, 2013 at 19:00 at FotoLoft Gallery, located in Moscow's renowned Contemporary Art Centre Winzavod and is introduced in writing by the Russian-Parisian stage designer, fashion historian and TV personality Alexandre Vassiliev.
The exhibition will run until March 31, 2013.

Aging today is a disease that is swept under the rug in the plastic surgeons office or is tucked away in the psychiatrist's drawer. The advertising and fashion industries breed classifications that distort private and public perception of female identity, often placing the mature, single, childless and ‘fameless’ woman on the very margin of society.
How do mature women today see themselves and how do they want to be seen? Do they enter this new phase peacefully or turbulently, and what could their words and behavior in front of the camera reveal about their mental and emotional position?
In her compelling portrait series Woman in Heat, the Berlin-based American photo¬grapher Benita Sucho-drev lets her models ‘speak out’. Dressed-up, dressed down, with or without make-up, each with her own attributes and without inhibitions.
“I wish to treat the female form less as an object of sexuality and more as a subject of sexuality”, says Benita Suchodrev. Woman in Heat takes an aesthetic but realistic approach to a topic widely neglected by mainstream culture.

The exhibition by the Russian emigrant Benita Suchodrev is, in my view, a decidedly important event in Moscow’s cultural life, a city characterized by artificiality and “pseudo-glamour”. In the fractured poses and distinctive faces of her unconventional models, this talented photographer sheds a new light on the female persona, on her destiny, and captures the “grimaces of urban space". Berlin of the present day and entire Europe of the great depression are sensed in her works and permit me to refer to her as “the contemporary Otto Dix”. At times humorous and at times solemn, her images expose the bare souls of the women rejected by glossy reality, battered by life and bereft of a notable future.

I see in Benita not only a great potential, but also a lesson to all those who want to see before them only Photoshop-modified, collagen-pumped blondes that, possibly, will also appear as lost with the passage of time, as do the heroines in Benita’s portrait gallery. I’ve often seen this happen.

Altern gilt in unserer jugenddominierten Gesellschaft als Krankheit, die in den Praxen der plastischen Chirurgie unter den Teppich gekehrt oder andernorts in die psychiatrische Schublade gesteckt wird.
Die Werbe- und Modebranche züchtet Klassifikationen, die die private und öffentliche Wahrnehmung weiblicher Identität verzerren und die alleinstehende, kinderlose und "glanzlose" Frau ab einem gewissen Alter an den Rand der Gesellschaft drängen. Wenn „sexy“ bedeutet, „sexuell begehrenswert“ zu sein, wie wollen dann Frauen, deren Wunsch nach Sex mit dem Alter abnimmt, auch weiterhin „sexy“ aussehen? Treten sie in die neue Phase ihres Lebens friedlich ein oder unter Turbulenzen? Und was verraten ihre Körpersprache (und ihre persönlichen Aussagen) über ihre mentale und emotionale Disposition?
Eine Frau über vierzig wird heute selten in einer anderen Rolle als der einer Mutter, einer Ehefrau oder einer 'Immer-noch-sexy'- celebrity wahrgenommen und dargestellt. Bedeutet dies, dass eine solche Frau aufhört, „sozial dienendes Wesen“ zu sein. Muss sie unausweichlich den Status eines Idols innehaben, um vom Mainstream, von den Medien oder vom Kunstbetrieb überhaupt noch wahrgenommen zu werden?
Durch das Porträt des weiblichen Körpers nicht als Objekt der sexuellen Anziehung, sondern als Subjekt der Sexualität – und durch das fotografische Medium eben doch auch objektiviert –, unternimmt WOMAN IN HEAT eine ästhetisch anspruchsvolle und zugleich wirklichkeitsgetreue Herangehensweise an ein Thema, das von der Mainstream-Kultur weitgehend vernachlässigt wird.
