In 2013 Gaensheimer carries forward this critical investigation of the significance of traditional forms of national representation in the national pavilions at the Venice Biennale. Contemporary artistic production in Germany, as elsewhere, is characterized by multilayered forms of cooperation between artists from all over the world and by international intellectual and cultural exchange. Therefore, at the Venice Biennale, Germany will not be represented as a hermetic national unit but as an active participant in a complex, worldwide constellation. For this reason Gaensheimer has invited four international artists from different countries:

Ai Weiwei
Romuald Karmakar
Santu Mofokeng
Dayanita Singh

The artists are represented in major museums and collections throughout the world and have taken part in important international, large-scale exhibitions and film festivals. Their works, exhibitions, publications, and films are part of the international artistic discourse and have in part determined this discourse. In addition, all four artists are also associated with the German art scene in a particular way. Ai Weiwei, Romuald Karmakar, Santu Mofokeng and Dayanita Singh have been working in Germany for many years, in close cooperation with German institutions, publishing houses, and collections. Their works share a critical reconsideration of the artists’ individual respective realities and offer important trajectories for reflecting on cultural and social self-conception in a globalized world. In the process the artists use a large range of media, including photography and film in addition to sculpture and installation.

Die 2011 begonnene kritische Beschäftigung mit der Bedeutung der traditionellen Form nationaler Repräsentation in den Länderpavillons auf der Biennale in Venedig setzt Susanne Gaensheimer 2013 fort. Künstlerisches Schaffen in Deutschland ist heute von vielfältigen Arten der Zusammenarbeit zwischen Künstlern aus aller Welt und einem internationalen intellektuellen und kulturellen Austausch geprägt. Deutschland soll daher auf der 55. Biennale in Venedig nicht als hermetische nationale Einheit, sondern als aktiver Teil eines komplexen, weltweiten Netzwerkes repräsentiert werden. Aus diesem Grund hat Susanne Gaensheimer vier internationale KünstlerInnen aus unterschiedlichen Ländern eingeladen:

Die KünstlerInnen sind in den großen Museen und Sammlungen der Welt vertreten und haben an den wichtigen internationalen Großausstellungen und Filmfestivals teilgenommen. Ihre Werke, Ausstellungen, Publikationen und Filme sind Teil der internationalen künstlerischen Diskurse und haben diese in den letzten Jahren zum Teil mitbestimmt. Darüber hinaus sind alle vier KünstlerInnen in besonderer Weise mit der deutschen Kunstszene verbunden. Seit vielen Jahren arbeiten Ai Weiwei, Romuald Karmakar, Santu Mofokeng und Dayanita Singh auch in Deutschland bzw. mit deutschen Institutionen, Verlagen und Sammlungen eng zusammen. Inhaltlich ist ihnen gemeinsam, dass sie sich in ihrem Werk auf kritische Weise mit den Bedingungen ihrer jeweiligen Lebenswirklichkeit beschäftigen und wesentliche Impulse geben zur Reflektion des aktuellen kulturellen und gesellschaftlichen Selbstverständnisses in einer global vernetzten Welt. Dabei nutzen sie selbstverständlich eine Vielzahl von Medien, neben Bildhauerei und Installation auch Fotografie und Film.
