GABRIELE CROPPI - “Metaphysics of an Urban Landscape”

Für seine Serie “Metaphysics of an Urban Landscape” bereiste Gabriele Croppi die Metropolen Europas und der USA, um sie in surrealistischem schwarz-weiß zu porträtieren. Seine Stadtlandschaften sind von starken Kontrasten beherrscht und zeigen die sonst so geschäftigen Plätze und Kreuzungen der Städte fast menschenleer.

Ob Eiffelturm, Guggenheim Museum oder berühmte Kathedrale – die dominierenden Objekte sind dem Betrachter bestens bekannt, aber Croppi´s Aufnahmen zeigen sie in einem völlig ungewohnten Licht. Die perfekt eingesetzten Flächen und Kontraste sowie die sparsame und feinfühlige Integration der Menschen tauchen die Stadtlandschaft und ihr Wahrzeichen in eine phantastische metaphysische Stimmung, weit über die normale Wahrnehmung hinaus.

"What interests me is the effect of the metaphysical in our thoughts and on our approach to life. This, in art as well as in photography, means going beyond, it means (that) the meaning and deep essence don’t stop with what we see.
I have interpreted urban scenes of some Metropolis, with their obvious architectural, sociological and cultural differences, but with the firm objective to give back to the final image that specific 'metaphysical dimension'. I would like to state that the result and contents of my research will not end in the images in which my project is embodied but in the way we could all look at them, filtering them with our subjectivity, with our cultural background, with all the questions, doubts, imagination which follow." - Gabriele Croppi

Gabriele Croppi (*1974, Domodossola) studierte Fotografie am Istituto Italiano di Fotografia in Milan. Viele Jahre lang arbeitete er an Reportagen die ihn in den Balkan, Amazonas und in andere lateinamerikanische Gebiete führten. Mitte der neunziger Jahre begann er mit einer Studie über das Verhältnis zwischen Fotografie und anderen Kunstformen wie Film, Malerei und Literatur.
Er lebt und arbeitet in Milan als Fotojournalist und Dozent am Istituto Italiano di Fotografia. Für sein Foto-Essay “Metaphysics of an Urban Landscape”, das Croppi für epea01 zusammenstellte erhielt er den ersten Platz in der Kategorie Architektur-Gebäude bei den International Photography Awards 2012 sowie den Golden Camera Award in Kiew.
