Die Kamera: The Düsseldorf School and Beyond
Online auction live for bidding now through August 20
artnet Auctions is proud to present Die Kamera: The Düsseldorf School and Beyond. This sale celebrates the strong German aesthetic of the Düsseldorf school, and features top German Contemporary artists such as Thomas Ruff, Thomas Struth, Axel Hütte, Wolfgang Tillmans, Elger Esser, Erwin Olaf, Candida Höfer, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Josef Schulz, and Thomas Demand. Works in this sale range in value from US$1,800 to over $30,000.
Highlights of the sale include several photographs by German photographers Bernd and Hilla Becher (German), whose monumental Post-Industrial style and crystalline coolness has had a profound and enduring influence on Contemporary photography.
Featured here, The Classroom (2005) by acclaimed photographer Erwin Olaf (Dutch, b.1959) is from the artist's Hope series, which, along with his series Rain and Grief, reveal characters caught in moments of longing, loss, and introspection. Olaf's highly stylized images draw from the iconography of the 1950s and 1960s, and evoke the sensibilities of Norman Rockwell (American, 1894–1978) and Edward Hopper (American, 1882–1967).
