Man Ray (b. Emmanuel Rudnitsky, 1890-1976) was a painter, photographer and film-maker, who became a major figure in the development of Surrealism and who co-founded the New York Dada movement. This is the first monographic exhibition of his work in Australia and is organised by the Art Gallery of New South Wales. The two hundred works (mostly vintage prints and some unpublished) are divided into nine major sections: New York & Duchamp, Films, Fashion, Portraits, Nudes, Objects, Rayographs (photographs taken without a camera), Landscapes and Documents. Man Ray was a superb technician and a highly inventive artist. He often created many variations from a specific shoot or from his darkroom manipulations. This exhibition emphasises his techniques of framing, cropping, solarising and use of the photogram in order to present a new, 'surreal' way of seeing, which continues to fascinate because of the lush and enigmatic beauty of the finished work.
