The Mori Art Museum’s next exhibition, Roppongi Crossing: New Visions in Japanese Art 2004, will feature contemporary visual art, design, fashion, media art, photography, film and architecture, bringing together different snapshots to demonstrate the current state of Japanese art. The relationships between works will create a positive “crossing” or meeting place of diverse viewpoints and will also present a “crossing” for Museum visitors themselves, who will encounter evocative new approaches to art and design. The first in a series of triennial shows that forge strong connections between the Japanese art scene and society at large, Roppongi Crossing will provide a platform for the work of Japanese and Asian artists to promote a wide-ranging and constructively critical dialogue about what constitutes quality in art and life. Over time, the exhibition will become an important resource for tracking the creative spirit of Japanese art, architecture and design. Roppongi Crossing is designed to encourage creativity, openness and dialogue. Each installment will have six different curators, chosen from different areas of Japanese creative life, as well as a Museum staff curator, each of whom can select up to 20 artists who have made an important contribution to Japanese art, architecture or design over the last three years. These nominees are then considered by the rest of the group for inclusion in the exhibition, narrowing the field to 40-60 top artists.
