The photography book CRITICAL MASS by photographer Michael Danner documents architecture, everyday routine, and security systems of all 17 German nuclear power plants, as well as the radioactive waste repository Asse II and the Gorleben exploratory mine. Danner’s pictures give us a rare glimpse behind the scenes of the power plants, showing areas that are normally off-limits. His series is accompanied by historical photographs and texts that document the planning and construction phases of the plants and visualize the social tensions. The layout of the book and the cut through the front cover refer to the interaction of the present time and the past and the conflict between nuclear power opponents and the authorities.

High hopes and deep skepticism have accompanied the use of nuclear power up to the present day. In the euphoric mood that prevailed in the 1950s, everything seemed possible; people took part in an unprecedented economic upswing and found nuclear energy to be a fascinating technology of the future. But in the 1980s the optimism of the years of boom gave way to a skepticism that was further fueled by the catastrophic nuclear accident in Chernobyl. Anti-nuclear activism has now shaped the political consciousness of a whole generation. And the disaster in Fukushima in 2011 heralded yet a new era in the debate – it seems that a nuclear phase-out in the medium-term is now inevitable. However, the issue of the final disposal of radioactive waste is still unresolved.

The exhibition CRITICAL MASS presents a selection of photographs taken at the radioactive waste repository Asse II and the Gorleben exploratory mine. Similar to his previous works Danner’s artistic and photographic practice focuses on the life-world. Here, he develops visual strategies that serve as a means of stepping back from the scene at hand, thus allowing for observation, interpretation and staging. The distance thus achieved creates space for various levels of meaning, such as social and historical references or medial reflections. His aim is to facilitate a subtile dialogue between image and recipient that reaches beyond the subject itself and links with the observer’s life-world.

In addition to selected works from his new publication, the show presents the installation CRITICAL MASS: Library, a loose compilation of antiquarian books, magazines and records from the climax of the debate in the 1980s, as well as signed editions from the series CRITICAL MASS.

Michael Danner (*1967 in Reutlingen) studied at the University of Brighton and at the Fachhochschule Bielefeld. He recieved numerous awards such as the Previewer Award of the 4th Fotofestivals Mannheim-Ludwigshafen-Heidelberg (2011) and fellowships such as Stiftung Kunstfond (2012). Selected exhibitions include: The World in London, The Photographers' Gallery, London (2012), Car Fires, Hereford Photography Festival, Hereford, Sight-_Seeing FO.KU.S, Innsbruck. Danner lives and works in Berlin.

In dem Bildband CRITICAL MASS gibt der Fotograf Michael Danner Einblick in Architektur, Alltag und Sicherungssysteme der 17 deutschen Atomkraftwerke, das Endlager Asse II sowie das Erkundungsbergwerk Gorleben. Seine Serie ist verschränkt mit historischen Bilddokumenten aus der Planungs- und Bauphase der Kraftwerke und macht so den gesellschaftlichen Konflikt visuell erfahrbar. Das Layout des Buches und der durchbrochene Buchdeckel verweist auf die Überlagerung von Gegenwart und Vergangenheit und die Auseinandersetzung zwischen Kernkraftwerkgegnern und Staatsgewalt.

Die Ausstellung CRITICAL MASS zeigt eine Auswahl der Fotografien, die in den vergangenen vier Jahren in diesem Kontext entstanden sind. Wie auch in früheren Arbeiten setzt sich Danners künstlerische und fotografische Praxis mit unserer Lebenswelt auseinander. Durch eine Distanz entsteht Raum für verschiedenste Bedeutungsebenen, wie soziale Bezüge, historische Referenzen, mediale Reflexionen. Damit schafft Danner Raum für einen subtilen Dialog zwischen Bild und Rezipienten, der über das eigentliche Sujet hinausgeht und an die Lebenswelt des Betrachters anknüpft.

Neben ausgewählten Einzelwerken, die vorwiegend Fotografien des Endlagers Asse II sowie das Erkundungsbergwerks Gorleben zeigen, werden die Installation CRITICAL MASS: Bibliothek, eine lose Sammlung antiquarischer Bücher, Zeitschriften und Schallplatten vom Höhepunkt der Debatte in den 1980er Jahren, sowie signierte Editionen aus der Bildreihe CRITICAL MASS präsentiert.
