VIVIANE SASSEN. IN AND OUT OF FASHION

The Dutch photographer Viviane Sassen has carved out her own unmistakable style and it is held in high regard. Alongside her autonomous work, however, she has worked many years as a fashion photographer. The Fotografie Forum Frankfurt will premier Viviane Sassen. In and Out of Fashion, a retrospective of her fashion photography from the last 18 years. Living in Kenya when she was a child has influenced her work as well as her studies in fine arts, photography and fashion design. In the Netherlands and abroad Viviane Sassen is known foremost as an artist, whose surreal, colourful photographs of Africa won her the Prix de Rome in 2007 and in 2011 she was presented with the International Center of Photography (ICP) Infinity Award in New York. During the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013 her photographs were exhibited at the Palazzo Encyclopedic.

Viviane Sassen has developed a unique visual language that is fascinating and full of energy. Her fashion photography is marked by both innovative strength and a surrealistic beauty. Sassen treats fashion photography as the ultimate playground, where she can work quickly and intuitively while enjoying the additional benefits of having a professional team on hand to facilitate her experiments. With the artist Emmeline de Mooij she produced photographic series for magazines such as Purple, Re-Magazine and Dazed & Confused. The series Nudes includes early photos by Sassen and De Mooij that were based on simple ideas and had strange and surprising effects. The exhibition also shows images from the now iconic series she made for the magazine Kutt in 2002.

In a new projection installation new works and past classics are on view. More than 300 photos taken from advertising campaigns created for Carven, M-Missoni, Stella McCartney/Adidas and Levi’s, and from editorials for magazines such as Pop, Wallpaper, Numéro, AnOther Magazine, Purple, and Dazed & Confused, can be seen. The exciting, experimental, creative, modern character of contemporary fashion is evident in these photographs.

Viviane Sassen carries out a modernist research into form that has much in common with the formal experiments of cubism, surrealism and minimalism. She boldly crops her models’ limbs to position them as floating objects in the image. She often adds areas of colour to her images or rotates her pictures to free them from the constraints of gravity, all of this to stimulate the viewer’s imagination.
Sassen works with natural resources like bright sunlight, shadows, and reflections in mirrors, but her images are also constructed using colours, forms and textures. Viviane Sassen’s spontaneous, artistic, and characteristically individual approach has ensured that her fashion photography goes far beyond the usual confines of this medium. The fashion domain affords her the space to carry out experiments that generate a reservoir of material, which enable her to develop the language of her autonomous work.

Mit ihrem sehr persönlichen und provokativen Stil ist die niederländische Fotografin Viviane Sassen (*1972) eine der spannendsten Figuren in der zeitgenössischen Modefotografie. Das Fotografie Forum Frankfurt stellt erstmals in Deutschland in der Überblicksausstellung In and Out of Fashion Viviane Sassens Modefotografien der letzten 18 Jahre aus. Ihre persönliche Bildsprache, die zugleich faszinierend und voller Energie ist, wurde sehr geprägt durch die Kindheitsjahre, die sie in Kenia verbrachte sowie durch ihr Studium der Kunst, Fotografie und des Modedesigns. Ihr eigenständiges Werk als freie Fotografin mit ihren surrealen, farbenfrohen Fotografien aus Afrika wurde 2007 mit dem Prix de Rome ausgezeichnet. 2011 wurde sie mit dem International Center of Photography (ICP) Infinity Award in New York ausgezeichnet. Bei der 55. Biennale von Venedig 2013 waren ihre Fotografien im Palazzo Encyclopedic ausgestellt.

In den letzten 18 Jahren hat Viviane Sassen eine emotionale und intensive Bildsprache entwickelt, die sich von der heute weitgehend kommerziell ausgerichteten einförmigen Modefotografie abhebt. Modefotografie ist für Sassen wie ein Spielplatz, an dem sie schnell und intuitiv arbeiten kann und die Vorteile eines professionellen Teams nutzt, um unbeschwert experimentieren zu können. Frühe Serien für Magazine, wie Purple, Lila, Re-Magazine und Dazed & Confused entstanden zum Teil in enger Zusammenarbeit mit der Fotografin Emmeline de Mooij.
Mit ihr produzierte Sassen auch die Serie Nudes. Zudem werden auch Bilder aus der schon legendären Serie gezeigt, die Sassen 2002 für das Magazin Kutt machte.

In einer raumgreifenden Installation sind neue Arbeiten und alte Klassiker zu sehen, darunter eine Auswahl von mehr als 300 Fotografien, die für Werbekampagnen der Marken Carven, M-Missoni, Stella McCartney/Adidas und Levi’s sowie für Magazine Pop, Wallpaper, Numéro, AnOther Magazine, Purple, und Dazed & Confused aufgenommen wurden. Diese Arbeiten spiegeln den spannenden, experimentellen, kreativen und modernen Charakter der zeitgenössischen Mode und die individuelle Bildsprache Sassens wider.

In Anlehnung an den Kubismus, Surrealismus und Minimalismus schneidet Sassen die Gliedmaßen ihrer Modelle aus und setzt sie in den Hintergrund, fügt Farbflächen in ihre Bilder ein, um die Fantasie des Betrachters anzuregen, oder dreht ihre Bilder soweit bis sie von den Zwängen der Schwerkraft befreit zu sein scheinen.
Sassen arbeitet mit natürlichen Mitteln, wie helles Sonnenlicht, Schatten, Spiegel und Reflexion, ihre Bilder sind aber auch durch Farben, Formen und Texturen gekennzeichnet.
Ihr unverwechselbarer Stil gepaart mit ihrem spontanen, nicht-kommerziellen und individuellen Ansatz hat dazu geführt, dass ihre Modefotografien weit über die üblichen Grenzen des Genres hinausgehen. Die Modebranche bietet ihr den Raum für Experimente, eine Fundgrube für Materialien, mit der sie ihre eigene Bildsprache entwickelt hat.
