The spectacular highlights this time are from the area of contemporary photography which will be sold on 31 May as part of the “Contemporary Art” auction. Of particular interest is a monumental starry sky “05 h 08 m /-65°” by Thomas Ruff from an edition of two examples (lot 794, 60,000 – 70,000 €) and the large format work “Flügel (Grand Piano)” by Thomas Demand (lot 635, 60,000 – 80,000 €). A magnificent piece depicting the interior of the “Theatre Municipal Calais I” by Candida Höfer (lot 690, 30,000 – 35,000 €) will be auctioned as well as further contemporary highlights by Elger Esser (lot 644, 12,000 – 15,000 €), Thomas Struth (lots 831/832, 5,000 € each), Marie-Jo Lafontaine (lot 721, 12,000 – 15,000 €) and a portfolio of 51 offset lithographs by Hiroshi Sugimoto entitled “Time Exposed” (lot 834, 8,000 €). From the performance artist Gordon Matta-Clark, who died at a young age, is a piece from the series 'Office Baroque' from 1977, a rarity now on the art market (lot 759, 15,000 – 20,000 €).

After the extraordinary success last autumn, Lempertz will be offering the second part of the Munich private collection of space photography. Under the title 'Fly me to the Moon II. NASA photographs 1961-1973', a total of 39 vintage photographs in an extra catalogue will be sold as part of the “Photography” auction on 30 May, with estimates from 400 to 5,000 € (lots 1-39).
Classical photography of the 19th - 21st centuries also features a number of star pieces; one example is a lacquer album with around 80 photographs from artists such as the Yokohama-based Italian photographer Adolfo Farsari, depicting the social life of a German business man and his family in Japan in the 1880s/1890s (lot 43, 3,000 – 4,000 €). 18 still life flower arrangements on albumen paper by the French photographer and textile designer Adolphe Braun from his series “Fleurs Photographiées”, dating 1854, are featured (lot 46, 8,000 – 10,000 €).

A small section of the auction is dedicated to the photographs of Josef Breitenbach. Born in Munich, the Jewish photographer emigrated to Paris in 1933, later moving to the USA. 13 works from a private family collection, primarily vintage prints from his early years in Munich and Paris, will be auctioned (lots 85-97, 900 - 2,500 €).
The auction will yet again feature a number of photographs from members of the “Fotoform” group such as Otto Steinert, for example a large format positive-negative montage “Paar mit sich selbst zu Dritt” (lot 156, 6,000 €), Peter Keetman (lots 163-166, 1,500 - 2,000 €), Ludwig Windstosser (lots 167 and 168, 1,500 € each) and Toni Schneiders (lots 159-162, 1,000 – 1,300 €).

American photography is also prominently represented, one shining example is a print of the famous shot from Andreas Feininger, dated 1955, “The Photojournalist (Dennis Stock)”, which was featured in the photography exhibition of the EXPO 1967 in Montreal (lot 119, 10,000 – 12,000 €). Also worth attention is an early vintage print from around 1926 of a portrait of “Bronja Perlmutter (Ms. Rene Clair)” by Berenice Abbott (lot 108, 6,000 €). Ansel Adams' famous view “Aspen, Northern New Mexico” from 1958 is offered for sale in the form of a later gelatin silver print (lot 203, 15,000 – 20,000 €). The works of Robert Mapplethorpe belong to the classical photography of the 20th century, here represented by a detail study of a male armpit (lot 97, 5,000 – 6,000 €).

The vintage print from René Burri featuring a group of boys playing football on Ipanema beach from 1958 (lot 140, 4/4.5000) and Sebastiao Salgado’s view of a teaming mass of people at the “Churchgate Station in Bombay” from 1995 (lot 222, 6,000 – 8,000 €) are two artistically important works from two internationally acclaimed and socially engaged reportage photographers.

The auction draws to a close with a hint of glamour with fashion photography from the last 20 years from Ellen von Unwerth (lot 219, 5,000 – 6,000 €), Patrick Demarchelier (lot 200, 4,000 – 5,000 €) and Rankin (lot 218, 3,000 €).

Die spektakulären Highlights kommen diesmal aus dem Bereich der zeitgenössischen Photographie, die am 31. Mai 2014 im Rahmen der Auktion „Zeitgenössische Kunst“ versteigert wird. Besonders hervorzuheben ist ein monumentaler Sternenhimmel von Thomas Ruff „05 h 08 m /-65°“ aus einer Auflage von 2 Exemplaren (Lot 794/60.000 - 70.000 €) und die großformatige Arbeit „Flügel (Grand Piano)“ von Thomas Demand (Lot 635/60.000 - 80.000 €). Prunkvoll ist das von Candida Höfer aufgenommene Interieur des „Théatre Municipal Calais I“ aus dem Jahr 2001 (Lot 690/30.000 - 35.000 €). Weitere Höhepunkte der zeitgenössischen Sparte kommen von Elger Esser (Lot 644/12.000 - 15.000 €), Thomas Struth (Lots 831/832/je 5.000 €), Marie-Jo Lafontaine (Lot 721/12.000 - 15.000 €) und Hiroshi Sugimoto (Lot 834/8.000 €). Eine Rarität auf dem Auktionsmarkt ist die Arbeit des jung verstorbenen Aktionskünstlers Gordon Matta-Clark aus der Serie „Office Baroque“ von 1977 (Lot 759/15.000 - 20.000 €).

Nach dem außergewöhnlichen Erfolg im vergangenen Herbst versteigert Lempertz am 30. Mai im Rahmen der Auktion „Photographie“ unter dem Titel „Fly me to the Moon II. Photographien der NASA 1961 – 1973“ einen zweiten Teil der Sammlung früher amerikanischer Weltraum-Photographie eines Münchner Privatsammlers. In dem Sonderkatalog kommen insgesamt 39 Vintages zum Aufruf. Die Schätzpreise liegen zwischen 400 und 5.000 € (Lots 1 – 39).

Auch die klassische Photographie des 19. – 21. Jahrhunderts, die im Anschluss an die NASA-Partie versteigert wird, kann mit zahlreichen Highlights aufwarten: Ein Lackalbum mit etwa 80 Photographien u.a. des in Yokohama ansässigen italienischen Photographen Adolfo Farsari aus den 1880er/1890er Jahre zeigt das gesellschaftliche Leben einer deutschen Kaufmannsfamilie in Japan (Lot 43/3.000 - 4.000 €). Von dem französischen Photographen und Textilgestalter Adolphe Braun werden 18 seiner stillebenhaften Blumenarrangements auf Albuminpapier aus seiner Serie „Fleurs Photographiées“ aus dem Jahr 1854 angeboten (Lot 46/8.000 - 10.000 €). Eine kleine Sondersektion ist dem Photographen Josef Breitenbach gewidmet. Der in München geborene jüdische Photograph emigrierte 1933 nach Paris und später in die USA. Zum Aufruf kommen 13 Photographien aus Familienbesitz – größtenteils Vintage-Prints – aus seinen frühen Münchner und Pariser Jahren (Lots 85 – 97/zwischen 900 und 2.500 €).

Auch diesmal enthält die Auktion wieder zahlreiche Photographien von Vertretern der Fotoform-Gruppe wie Otto Steinert – von ihm u.a. eine großformatige Positiv-Negativ-Montage „Paar mit sich selbst zu Dritt“ (Lot 156/6.000 €) – sowie Peter Keetman (Lots 163-166/1.500 – 2.000 €), Ludwig Windstosser (Lots 167/168/je 1.500 €) und Toni Schneiders (Lots 159 – 162/1.000 – 1.300 €).

Prominent ist auch die amerikanische Photographie vertreten: Herausragend ein Abzug der berühmten, 1955 datierenden Aufnahme von Andreas Feininger „The Photojournalist (Dennis Stock)“, der in der Photoausstellung der EXPO 1967 in Montreal ausgestellt war (Lot 119/10.000 - 12.000 €). Hervorzuheben ist auch ein früher, um 1926 entstandener Vintage-Abzug eines Portraits von „Bronja Perlmutter (Ms. René Clair)“ von Berenice Abbott (Lot 108/6.000 €). Ansel Adams‘ berühmte Ansicht „Aspen, Northern New Mexico“ von 1958 kommt als späterer Gelatinesilberabzug zum Aufruf (Lot 203/15.000 - 20.000 €).

Zu den Klassikern der Photographie des 20. Jahrhunderts gehören die Aufnahmen von Robert Mapplethorpe. Sein Detail eines männlichen Torsos liegt bei 5/6.000 € (Lot 97). Mit René Burris als Vintage-Print vorliegender Aufnahme einer Gruppe fußballspielender Jungen am Strand von Ipanema aus dem Jahr 1958 (Lot 140/4.000 - 4.500 €) und Sebastiao Salgados Ansicht einer flirrenden Menschenmenge an der „Churchgate Station in Bombay“ von 1995 (Lot 222/6.000 - 8.000 €) sind zwei künstlerisch hochrangige Werke zweier international renommierter und sozial engagierter Reportage-Photographen vertreten. Glamouröse Akzente setzen schließlich die in den letzten zwanzig Jahren entstandenen Modephotographien von Ellen von Unwerth (Lot 219/5.000 - 6.000 €), Patrick Demarchelier (Lot 220/4.000 - 5.000 €) und Rankin (Lot 218/3.000 €).
