The Wolfsburg art prize „Junge Stadt sieht Junge Kunst“ 2014 is awarded to the German-Iranian artist Bettina Pousttchi. All in all, the award is endowed with 80,000 € coupled both with an exhibition in the Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg and with a considerable publication. Furthermore, there will be an acquisition for the art collection of the Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg.

The prize was for the first time awarded in 1959 and considers itself to be a supportive initiative for artists in the middle of their careers. Ideally, it would act as a catalyst for the retrospection and further development. Bettina Pousttchi works equally in the field of media, photography, video and sculpture and deals primarily with subjects as perception of time and drawing boundaries. Asking for art in public space is a theme which regularly occurs in her works, too. The diversity and complexity in terms of content have convinced the jury for this year’s decision.

Similarly, as subtle interventions in the course of daily life circumvent our perception, so do the objects of Bettina Pousttchi – which are often taken from public spaces – underrun our cognition. They are formed anew as sculptures, referring both to ordinariness and art history. In her works she uses therefore barriers or bollards from which she creates new, abstract forms. The barriers are repeatedly made use of, thematizing subjects as borders and borderline experience as well as discharge of energy.

Bettina Pousttchi has become known by her work „World Time Clock“ (since 2008) in which she flew around the world in order to take pictures of all the different time zones, photographing each clock at exactly five minutes to two. In her site-specific work “Echo” (2009/2010), she recalled the historical architecture and its corresponding ‚zeitgeist‘ while she covered four outerwalls of Berlin’s Temporäre Kunsthalle with a billboard. This photographic work illustrated a digital montage by the Palace of the Republic (former seat of the GDR parliament and cultural location of East Germany), raising questions about the mirroring of ideology and architecture, in general.

The award is coupled both with an exhibition at the Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg and with an artwork covering the façade of the city’s castle. The artist will coat the north wing and the castle’s edges with a 2.150 m² photo installation called “The City”. Her artwork is making reference to the history of the 20th century planned city Wolfsburg by constructing a cover which illustrates a coherent skyline of ten skyscrapers, being an architectural icon of modern times.

From a cultural and historical perspective, the castle of Wolfsburg is amongst the oldest and most important structures in the young city of Wolfsburg, and has given the city its name since 1945. The fortified complex, which was first mentioned in documents in 1302, underwent numerous expansions and redesigns during the Middle Ages and Renaissance and most recently in 1840, and is considered from the perspective of architectural history as an architectural monument of the northern German Renaissance.

Bettina Pousttchi, born 1971 in Mainz, lives and works in Berlin. She has studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf by Prof. Rosemarie Trockel and Prof. Gerhard Merz and at the Université de Paris VIII. Moreover, Pousttchi attended the Whitney Independent Studio Program of the Whitney Museums in New York.

Der Wolfsburger Kunstpreis „Junge Stadt sieht Junge Kunst“ wird im Jahr 2014 an die deutsch-iranische Künstlerin Bettina Pousttchi vergeben. Insgesamt ist der Preis mit 80.000 € dotiert, verbunden mit einer Ausstellung in der Städtischen Galerie Wolfsburg und einer umfangreichen Publikation. Zusätzlich gibt es einen Ankauf für die Sammlung der Städtischen Galerie Wolfsburg.

Der Preis wurde 1959 erstmals verliehen und versteht sich als eine fördernde Initiative für Künstlerinnen und Künstler, die sich in der Mitte ihrer Laufbahn befinden. Idealerweise kann er als Katalysator für Rückschau und Weiterentwicklung wirken.

Bettina Pousttchi arbeitet gleichermaßen in den Medien Fotografie, Video und Skulptur und beschäftigt sich vorrangig mit Thematiken wie Zeitwahrnehmung und Grenzziehungen. Fragen nach Kunst im öffentlichen Raum – den sie auch immer wieder mit Arbeiten bespielt – finden sich in ihrem Werk regelmäßig wieder. Die Vielfalt und inhaltliche Vielschichtigkeit der Arbeiten haben die Jury überzeugt und waren ausschlaggebend für die diesjährige Entscheidung.

Wie subtile Interventionen im Alltag unterlaufen Pousttchis Objekte, die oftmals aus dem öffentlichen Raum entnommen sind, unsere täglichen Wahrnehmungsmuster. Sie formieren sich neu zu Skulpturen, die sowohl Bezüge zu einer Alltäglichkeit als auch zur Kunstgeschichte aufweisen. Dabei verwendet sie in ihren Arbeiten zum Beispiel Absperrgitter oder Poller, aus denen sie neue, abstrakte Formen erschafft. Die immer wieder verwendeten Absperrgitter thematisieren Grenzen und Grenzerfahrungen sowie die Freisetzung von neuer Energie.

Bekannt geworden ist Bettina Pousttchi mit ihrer Arbeit „World Time Clock“ (seit 2008), in der sie einmal um die Welt flog, um in allen Zeitzonen eine öffentliche Uhr jeweils um 5 Minuten vor 2 Uhr zu fotografieren. Mit der ortsspezifischen Arbeit „Echo“ (2009/2010) rief sie eine historische Architektur und den hiermit verbundenen Zeitgeist wieder in Erinnerung, als sie mit ihrer Fotoarbeit die vier Außenwände der Temporären Kunsthalle in Berlin mit einer großen Plakatwand bedeckte, die eine digitale Montage von Aufnahmen des Palastes der Republik darstellten. Hier werden Fragen nach der Spiegelung von Ideologie in Architektur offenbar.

Für die Ausstellung in der Städtischen Galerie Wolfsburg ist neben einer Präsentation in den Ausstellungsräumen mit Installationen, keramischen Arbeiten und einem Video auch eine Arbeit für die Fassade von Schloss Wolfsburg geplant. Auf 2.150 m² wird Bettina Pousttchi eine Fotoinstallation auf einer Plane anbringen, die den Nordflügel des Schlosses und die Seitenflanken bedeckt. „The City“ nimmt Bezug auf die Geschichte Wolfsburgs als Planstadt des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts. Die Künstlerin wird ein zusammenhängendes Motiv aus zehn Gebäuden errichten, die alle in Bezug stehen zur Geschichte des Wolkenkratzers, der architektonischen Ikone der Moderne.
