"Chernogirls Episode II: NYC"

In the current exhibition entitled "Graffiti is ART?", the gallery is pleased to present a selection of the actual work series "Chernogirls Episode II: NYC" from the German-American photographic artist Marc Erwin Babej (*1970 Frankfurt).

The name Chernogirls fuses the name of the former Soviet city of Chernobyl and "girls". The title gives an idea about the topic: a portrait of cosmopolitan young women from the first post-Soviet generation, who were born right around the time of the catasptrophic nuclear accident in 1986. Babej created Chernogirls Episode I in the exclusion zone around the former Chernobyl nuclear power plant, as well as in Minsk. Through this juxtaposition of decay and beauty, of past and present, his work achieves an alienation effect in the vein of Bertolt Brecht and his “epic theater.” Babej’s use of layered meanings and uneasy visual coexistences set his images apart from the great mass of fine art photography.> In "Chernogirls Episode II: NYC"" series, of which six images are presented in the exhibition, the artist continues his project. He photographed Chernogirls in this capital of fashion, where they live and make a career most of the year. Again, they are depicted as beautiful alien bodies – strangers in a strange land. Babej portrays them in gritty, dilapidated settings: in front of graffiti walls or in the streets of Brooklyn and Chinatown – always in his aestheticizing lighting style of 1940’s Hollywood glamor photography.

"Instead of showing the glamorous Chernogirls in "fitting"" places, like Madison Avenue or SoHo, I portray them in gritty settings that represent a disconnect with their appearance. As in Brecht 's epic theater, my images aim to bar the viewer from simply immersing himself in a pleasant fantasy. Seeing a disconnect motivates viewers to think – and form their own point of view"", says Babej.

In der aktuellen Ausstellung "Graffiti is ART?" zeigt die Galerie eine Auswahl der neuen Fotoserie "Chernogirls Episode II: NYC" des bekannten deutsch-amerikanischen Fotokünstlers Marc Erwin Babej (*1970, Frankfurt).

Der Name Chernogirls ist ein "Kunsttitel", zusammengesetzt aus dem Namen der ex-sowjetischen Stadt Tschernobyl und dem englischen Begriff für Mädchen: Girls. Der Titel lässt erahnen, um was geht. Babej fotografierte seine erste Episode der Chernogirls an ihrem Ursprung, in der Speerzone von Tschernobyl sowie in Minsk. In der Serie bildet er junge Frauen aus der ehemaligen UdSSR ab, die zur Zeit des Reaktorunfalls 1986 geboren wurden und der ersten postsowjetischen Generation angehören. Babej fotografierte seine Darstellerinnen dank einer Sondergenehmigung innerhalb des immer noch verseuchten Speergebietes, in schönen, grazilen Posen. Durch eben diese Gegenüberstellung von Verfall und Schönheit, von Vergangenheit und Gegenwart, wird ein Verfremdungseffekt à la Bertolt Brecht erzielt, ein Aspekt der Vielschichtigkeit der Inhalte, der Babejs Fotografien aus der grossen Masse der Kunstfotografien heraushebt.

In der "Chernogirls Episode II: NYC" Serie setzt der Künstler sein Projekt fort. Er fotografiert Chernogirls in der Modehauptstadt New York, wo sie den grössten Teil des Jahres leben und Karriere machen. Auch hier alles im Zeichen der Verfremdung, denn Babej lichtet seine schönen Darstellerinnen in Räumen verfallener Häuser, vor Graffiti Walls oder mitten in den Strassen von Brooklyn und Chinatown ab – stets im Beleuchtungsstil der Hollywood Glamour Fotografie der 40er Jahre.

"Anstatt die Darstellerinnen an glamourösen Orten wie der Fitfth oder Madison Avenue abzubilden, porträtiere ich sie an verwahrlosten Orten. Wie in Brechts epischem Theater geht es in meiner Fotografie darum, den Betrachter davon abzuhalten, sich in eine angenehme Fantasie zu vertiefen. Durch die Brechung des Erwarteten, soll er zum Nachdenken motiviert werden", so Marc Erwin Babej.

Die Chernogirls Serie wurde von Roger Ballen kuratiert.
