In June 2014 the Helmut Newton Foundation celebrates its tenth year anniversary. The museum first opened its doors with the exhibitions “Us and Them” and “Sex and Landscapes,” which were selected by Helmut Newton shortly before his death. Now, ten years later, foundation president June Newton (a.k.a. Alice Springs) has chosen the same combination.

“Us and Them” is a joint exhibition and book project by Helmut and June Newton. A photographic journal of their life together, the project includes self-portraits, at times intimate, reciprocal portraits, as well as photographs of actors, artists, and other prominent figures of the times. Taken during the 1980s and 1990s at separate sittings, the photographs of the international jet set by Helmut Newton and Alice Springs are presented side-by-side in pairs.

The exhibition “Sex and Landscapes” brings together large-format landscapes and nude photographs taken in black-and-white and color between 1974 and 2001. Overclouded seascapes and breaking waves outside Monte Carlo or neo-baroque Madonna figurines in small Italian towns mingle with nudes in glamorous and provocative scenes of erotic obsession, played out by a female cast.

Im Juni 2014 feiert die Helmut Newton Stiftung ihr zehnjähriges Bestehen. Als Eröffnungsausstellung bestimmte Helmut Newton damals, kurz vor seinem Tod, „Us and Them“ und „Sex and Landscapes“. Nun, zum Jubiläum zehn Jahre später, wählt die Stiftungspräsidentin June Newton (alias Alice Springs) die gleiche Kombination.

„Us and Them“ ist ein gemeinsames Ausstellungs- und Buchprojekt. Inhaltlich ist es eine Art photographisches Tagebuch ihres Zusammenlebens und beinhaltet gegenseitige, teilweise intime Porträts und Selbstporträts sowie Aufnahmen von Schauspielern, Künstlern und anderen Prominenten der Zeit. Die Bildnisse dieser Protagonisten eines internationalen Jet-Sets der 1980er und 1990er Jahre, aufgenommen von Helmut und June Newton bei unterschiedlichen Porträtsitzungen, werden als Bildpaare unmittelbar nebeneinander präsentiert. Jedes dieser Porträts erzählt eine komplexe Geschichte, und die Protagonisten begegnen uns hier mal als private und mal als öffentliche Person respektive mit zwei unterschiedlichen emotionalen Facetten.

Die Ausstellung „Sex and Landscapes“ vereint großformatige Landschaftsaufnahmen und Akte in Schwarz-Weiß und Farbe, entstanden zwischen 1974 und 2001. Das Ausstellungsprojekt beinhaltet wolkenverhangene Seestücke und sich brechende Wellen vor Monte Carlo, neobarocke Madonnenfiguren in italienischen Kleinstädten oder den Berliner Grunewaldsee, verwoben mit Glamour und mitunter provokanten Inszenierungen sexueller Obsessionen in weiblicher Besetzung.
