During the 1980s photographer and author Roland Hagenberg documented the art world in New York, where he met Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Francesco Clemente, Robert Mapplethorpe and dozens of other renowned artists in their studios. Among them was also Jean-Michel Basquiat whom Hagenberg photographed while painting, watching TV and consuming drugs. A couple of years later the painter overdosed on heroin at age 28.

Hagenberg’s black and white photographs depicting Basquiat’s morbid-romantic world are now on view for the first time in Europe at ponyhof artclub. On this occasion the gallery publishes an edition of 99 linen-bound boxes with eight photographs - numbered and signed.

Roland Hagenberg – who grew up in Vienna, Austria—has been living in Tokyo for twenty years. Collaborations with other artists were always part of his work. For instance, with Martin Kippenberger he created the publication „Vom Jugendstil zum Freistil“, with Karel Appel the 600-page-text-collection „Dupe of Being“ and with Yayoi Kusama a limited edition named „plantSÜDEN“.

Hagenberg‘s books have been published in several languages. At the moment he collaborates with Japanese star-architects to build small experimental guesthouses in Raiding, birthplace of composer Franz Liszt. The first building by Terunobu Fujimori (Storkhouse) opened to the public last year. A model of Storkhouse was exhibited at Villa Stuck in Munich in 2012. This year construction starts for Hiroshi Hara‘s guesthouse, followed by the works of three Pritzker Prize recipients: Toyo Ito, Kazuyo Sejima und Ryue Nishizawa.

Hagenberg’s Basquiat-portraits where captured on 35-mm Ilford HP5 film. An oversized version of a contact sheet mounted on aluminum (150 x 110cm) is also on view at ponyhof artclub.

Although the photographs have appeared in numerous publications worldwide (e.g. for Musee d’Art Moderne Paris, Christies, Bonhams) they were only exhibited three times until now: at Gallery 360 in Tokyo (with Yoko Ono), at Rosa Esman Gallery New York und at Sin Sin Fine Art in Hong Kong.

The edition „BASQUIAT” includes eight photographs and a text by Roland Hagenberg. It is published in an edition of 99, signed and numbered. The black boxes are linen-bound (22 x 30.7cm) and the photographs sized A4. Until June 4 2014: 660€. Thereafter: 860€.

Fotograf und Autor Roland Hagenberg hat im New York der 80er Jahre die Kunstwelt dokumentiert. Dabei entstanden ungewöhnliche Portraits von Jean-Michel Basquiat: bei der Arbeit, beim Fernsehen, beim Drogenkonsum. Wenige Jahre später verstarb der Kultmaler im Alter von 28 Jahren an einer Überdosis Heroin. Hagenbergs Schwarz-Weiß-Fotos aus Basquiats düster-romantischen Welt sind nun zum ersten Mal in Europa bei ponyhof artclub ausgestellt. Dazu erscheint eine Edition mit acht Fotografien – die 99 leinengebundenen Boxen sind nummeriert, signiert und enthalten einen Text des Fotografen.

Roland Hagenberg ist in Wien aufgewachsen und lebt seit 20 Jahren in Tokio. Gemeinschaftsprojekte mit anderen Künstlern waren schon immer Teil seines Schaffens. So entstand mit Martin Kippenberger die Publikation „Vom Jugendstil zum Freistil“, mit Karel Appel die Textsammlung „Dupe of Being“ und mit Yayoi Kusama die limitierte Edition „plantSÜDEN“.

Hagenbergs Bücher sind in mehreren Sprachen erschienen. Im Moment arbeitet er mit japanischen Stararchitekten an der Entwicklung von experimentellen Kleinhäusern in Raiding, dem Geburtsort von Franz Liszt. Der erste Bau von Terunobu Fujimori (Storkhouse) wurde letztes Jahre fertiggestellt (ein Modell davon war 2012 in der Villa Stuck in München zu sehen). Von Hiroshi Hara entsteht dieses Jahr ein Gästehaus, gefolgt von bewohnbaren Kunstwerken der drei Pritzker Preisträger Toyo Ito, Kazuyo Sejima und Ryue Nishizawa. Entstanden sind Hagenbergs Basquiat-Portraits auf 35-mm Ilford HP5 Film. Eine überdimensionale Abbildung des Kontatkbogens – aufgezogen auf einer Aluminumplatte (150x 110cm) – ist ebenfalls Teil der Ausstellung bei ponyhof artclub. Zwar wurden die Fotos bisher in zahlreichen Magazinen und Katalogen abgebildet (u.a. Musee d’Art Moderne Paris, Christies, Bonhams), vertreten waren sie in Ausstellungen nur dreimal: in der Gallery 360 in Tokyo (mit Yoko Ono), in der Rosa Esman Galerie New York und bei Sin Sin Fine Art in Hong Kong.
