Diana Scheunemann "Love American Skin"

Love American Skin is a series of impressive images recounting Diana Scheunemann’s journey through America and under the skin of her adopted country. It’s the skin of a nation presented as a landscape or surface over which her and our eyes can play – curiously, lustfully, tragically and lovingly. It’s the skin of a nation and a collective history told not as a single, big narrative, but as the stories of the people Diana Scheunemann meets on her travels through the US.

Diana Scheunemann took an eight-week road trip clockwise through 21 US states accompanied by her boyfriend, who along the way became her husband. Over the course of 60 days she photographed and interviewed 60 people she met in diners, on the sidewalk, or on their front porches. With her curiosity and a candid eye, she was able to capture a series of intimate but unprejudiced images. The result is a kind of declaration of love, a multifaceted kaleidoscope of an America most people aren’t even aware of. Love American Skin is Diana Scheunemann’s first major exhibition in Switzerland.

Diana Scheunemann was born in Germany in 1975. When she was 15 she moved to Switzerland, where she attended Zurich University of the Arts. She has earned a reputation for images of unadorned authenticity, and intimate and sometimes provocative commercial and editorial photo campaigns for well-known brands and leading international magazines. Her photographs have been published in top titles including Vogue, Elle, Playboy, Arena, and GQ in Europe and the US.

Alongside this work, since 1999 she has been pursuing Behind My Face, a project documenting every day of her life in the form of a self-portrait. To date the project has resulted in four monographs: Ambisexual (2001), Diana Scheunemann (2005), Freedom In Flashes (2007) and Love American Skin (2013). Besides the book, Love American Skin features Diana Scheunemann’s first feature-length documentary film. She currently lives in New York, and is in regular demand as a fashion, advertising and editorial photographer.

"Love American Skin" erzählt in eindrücklichen Bildern von Diana Scheunemanns Reise durch und unter die Haut ihrer Wahlheimat Amerika. Es ist die Haut einer Nation als einer Landschaft oder einer Oberfläche, auf denen ihre und unsere Augen neugierig spielen, lüstern, tragisch und liebevoll. Es ist die Haut einer Nation und ihrer kollektiven Geschichte, die sich nicht als die "eine" und "grosse" Erzählung versteht, sondern als jene der Menschen, die Diana Scheunemann auf ihrer Reise durch die USA begegnen.

Diana Scheunemann reiste mit ihrem Freund, der unterwegs ihr Ehemann wird, während acht Wochen im Auto im Uhrzeigersinn durch 21 Staaten der USA. An 60 Tagen portraitierte und interviewte sie 60 Menschen, denen sie auf dem Weg begegnet; in Diners, auf dem Gehsteig oder auf ihrer Veranda. Mit ihrer Neugier und ihrem offenen Blick gelingen ihr dabei intime und zugleich vorurteilsfreie Bilder. Das Resultat ist eine Art Liebeserklärung, ein facettenreiches Kaleidoskop eines wenig bekannten Amerikas. Love American Skin ist die erste grössere Ausstellung der schweizerisch-deutschen Fotografin in der Schweiz.

Diana Scheunemann wurde 1975 in Deutschland geboren und zog mit 15 in die Schweiz, wo sie die Zürcher Hochschule der Künste besuchte. Sie wurde bekannt für ihre Bilder ungeschönter Authentizität, durch intime und teilweise provokante kommerzielle sowie redaktionelle Bildkampagnen für renommierte Marken und international führende Zeitschriften. Ihre Bildstrecken wurden in führenden Magazinen wie Vogue, Elle, Playboy, Arena und GQ in Europa und den USA publiziert. Neben diesen Arbeiten verfolgt sie seit 1999 das Fotoprojekt Behind My Face, welches jeden Tag ihres Lebens in Form eines Selbstportraits dokumentiert. Daraus sind bislang vier Monographien “Ambisexual” (2001), “Diana Scheunemann” (2005), “Freedom In Flashes” (2007) und “Love American Skin” (2013) entstanden, wobei Love American Skin nebst der Publikation Scheunemanns ersten Dokumentarfilm in Spielfilmlänge umfasst. Zur Zeit lebt sie in New York und ist gefragt als Mode-, Werbungs- und Redaktionsfotografin.
