Great names before and behind the camera, historical treasures, landmark events of 20th-century history which have long become icons of photographic history, modernist photo classics and sought-after photo books! 15 years ago, WestLicht first opened its doors. This will be celebrated with the 211 lots of the first Photo Auction of the anniversary year, offering a fascinating, unique panorama of photographic history from the medium’s earliest days to the present.

Curtain up for Marlene Dietrich, Anna May Wong and Leni Riefenstahl! These three laughed into Alfred Eisenstaedt’s camera at a costume ball in Berlin in 1928 (lot 50, estimate: € 14,000 – € 18,000).

The various faces of Marilyn Monroe are the subject of an extraordinary convolute of 56 large-format prints from the legendary series The Last Sitting. Shortly before her death in 1962, Bert Stern was able to capture the Hollywood diva directly, in close proximity and unselfconsciously (lot 166, estimate: € 100,000 – € 120,000).

Rene Burris' portrait of Che Guevara, depicting the revolutionary with cigar in hand, has also attained iconic status (lot 107, estimate: € 6,000 – € 7,000).

Not a woman, but a puppet inspired by Olympia from E. T. A. Hoffmann’s Der Sandmann was the model for the German Surrealist Hans Bellmer. The provocative photographer exerted a lasting influence on artists such as Frederick Sommer, Ralph Eugene Meatyard and Cindy Sherman. One copy of his opus magnum, the photo book La Poupée, published in an edition of only 100 books, will be auctioned (lot 40, estimate: € 30,000 – € 35,000).

The innocent fascination of dolls, on the other hand, was captured by Alfred Eisenstaedt in the faces of Children at a Puppet Theatre in Paris in 1963. This incomparable image of staggering spontaneity is offered by a private collector as a signed print (lot 121, estimate: € 12,000 – € 14,000).

Franz Hubmann, the doyen of Austrian photographers, is represented by a group of more than 200 portraits and studio images of artists of the Paris School, including world-famous photographs of Picasso and Giacometti, but also numerous previously unpublished images (lot 125, estimate: € 40,000 – € 50,000).

A portrait by the British photographer Platon shows a familiar head of state: Austrian President Heinz Fischer, photographed in 2009 during the General Assembly of the United Nations (lot 206, estimate: € 3,000 – € 4,000).

Magnum legends are traditionally represented in the WestLicht auctions with top lots. In Last Days of the Kuomintang, Shanghai, December 1948 – January 1949, Henri Cartier-Bresson succeeded in securing one of the most impressive visual documents of China’s takeover by the Communists (lot 92, estimate: € 12,000 – € 14,000). Elliott Erwitt contributed the famous "umbrella jumper" in front of the Eiffel Tower in 1989 (lot 110, estimate: € 8,000 – € 10,000); Martin Parr is represented by The Last Resort (New Brighton, Merseyside) dated 1983–1986 (lot 193, estimate: € 4,000 – € 5,000).

Among the offers dating from the medium’s early period, two extraordinary lots stand out. 26 albumin prints from the series Banater Besitzungen by Andreas Groll, one of the pioneers of industrial photography, will be auctioned. It is the largest known convolute ever offered on the free market (lot 4, estimate: € 30,000 – € 35,000). From the library of Victor Thonet, there is a portfolio of hand-signed heliogravures and 25 zinc gravures based on gum prints by Heinrich Kühn, Hugo Henneberg and Hans Watzek (lot 7, estimate: € 25,000 – € 30,000). These three most important representatives of Viennese pictorialism had banded together to form the so called "Trifolium" or "Wiener Kleeblatt".

Große Namen vor und hinter der Kamera, historische Schätze, Ereignisse im Weltgeschehen des 20. Jahrhunderts, die längst zu Ikonen der Fotogeschichte wurden, Fotografie-Klassiker der Moderne und gesuchte Fotobücher! Vor 15 Jahren wurde WestLicht eröffnet. Das wird mit den 211 Losen der ersten Foto-Auktion des Jubiläumsjahres entsprechend gefeiert. Mit einem faszinierenden, einzigartigen Panorama der Fotohistorie von der Frühzeit bis heute.

Vorhang auf für Marlene Dietrich, Anna May Wong und Leni Riefenstahl! Die lachten 1928 Alfred Eisenstaedt auf einem Kostümball in Berlin in die Kamera (Los 50, Schätzpreis: 14.000 - 18.000 Euro).

Die verschiedenen Gesichter der Marilyn Monroe zeigt ein außergewöhnliches Konvolut mit 56 großformatigen Prints aus der legendären Serie "The Last Sitting". Bert Stern konnte die Hollywood-Diva 1962 kurz vor ihrem Tod direkt, nahe und unbefangen festhalten (Los 166, Schätzpreis: 100.000 - 120.000 Euro).

Ikonenstatus besitzt auch René Burris Porträt Che Guevaras, das den Revolutionär mit Zigarre zeigt (Los 107, Schätzpreis: € 6.000 - 7.000).

Keine Frau, sondern eine Puppe, nach dem Vorbild der Olympia aus E.T.A. Hoffmanns "Der Sandmann", war Modell für den deutschen Surrealisten Hans Bellmer. Der Provokateur beeinflusste Künstler wie Frederick Sommer, Ralph Eugene Meatyard und Cindy Sherman nachhaltig. Von seinem Opus Magnum, dem in einer Auflage von nur 100 Stück erschienenen Fotobuch "La Poupée", gelangt eines der begehrten Exemplare zur Versteigerung (Los 40, Schätzpreis: 30.000 – 35.000 Euro).

Die unschuldige Faszination von Puppen fing dagegen Alfred Eisenstaedt in den Gesichtern der "Kinder bei einem Puppenspiel" in Paris 1963 ein. Eine unvergleichliche Aufnahme von umwerfender Spontaneität, die als signierter Print aus Privatbesitz angeboten wird (Los 121, Schätzpreis: 12.000 – 14.000 Euro).

Franz Hubmann, der Doyen der österreichischen Fotografie, ist mit einer einzigartigen Gruppe von über 200 Porträts und Atelieraufnahmen von Künstlern der Pariser Gruppe vertreten, darunter so berühmte Motive wie die Bildnisse von Picasso und Giacometti, aber auch zahlreiche bisher unveröffentlichte Aufnahmen (Los 125, 40.000 – 50.000 Euro).

Einem heimischen Staatsmann begegnen wir in einem Porträt des britischen Fotografen Platon: Bundespräsident Heinz Fischer, aufgenommen im Jahr 2009 während der Hauptversammlung der Vereinten Nationen (Los 206, Schätzpreis: 3.000 – 4.000 Euro).

Auch die Magnum-Legenden sind in den WestLicht-Auktionen traditionell mit Top-Losen präsent. Henri Cartier-Bresson gelang mit "Last days of the Kuomintang, Shanghai, December 1948 – January 1949" eines der eindrücklichsten Bilddokumente der Übernahme Chinas durch die Kommunisten (Los 92, 12.000 – 14.000 Euro). Von Elliott Erwitt kommt der berühmte Regenschirm-Springer vor dem Eiffelturm aus dem Jahr 1989 (Los 110, Schätzpreis: 8.000 – 10.000 Euro) unter den Hammer, Martin Parr ist mit "The Last Resort (New Brighton, Merseyside)" von 1983 - 1986 vertreten (Los 193, Schätzpreis: 4.000 – 5.000 Euro).

Aus dem Angebot aus der Frühzeit des Mediums ragen zwei besonders außergewöhnliche Lose heraus. Von Andreas Groll, einem der Pioniere der Industriefotografie, gelangen 26 Albumin-Abzüge aus seinen "Banater Besitzungen" zur Auktion. Es handelt sich um das größte bekannte Konvolut, das bis dato auf dem freien Kunstmarkt angeboten wurde (Los 4, Schätzpreis: 30.000 - 35.000 Euro). Aus der Bibliothek von Victor Thonet stammt eine Mappe mit 20 handsignierten Heliogravüren und 25 Zinkgravüren nach Gummidrucken von Heinrich Kühn, Hugo Henneberg und Hans Watzek (Los 7, Schätzpreis: 25.000 - 30.000 Euro). Die drei bedeutendsten Vertreter des Wiener Piktorialismus hatten sich als "Trifolium" oder "Wiener Kleeblatt" zusammengeschlossen.
