For the 20th anniversary of Paris Photo In November 2016 Galerie Julian Sander will present “Troubled Times”, a group of photographs which revive the concept of an exhibition that was originally curated by Gerd Sander, father of the gallery owner. This term refers to the tense relationship of social classes in New York City as seen through the eyes of Louis Faurer, Lisette Model, Weegee and Leon Levinstein. Julian Sander enriches this original concept by creating a narrative that starts in NYC in the early 20th century and continues into contemporary photographs taken in Iraq and Afghanistan and Argentina.
The idea of “Troubled Times” is rooted in the constant challenge we, as citizen of this planet, face in fulfilling justice for both ourselves and our fellow people. Photography is the medium which allows us to consume sights as if they were dreams we have had. As such the medium is destined like no other to impact our ability to both realize, accept and effect change from the status quo. “Troubled Times” takes its place in this process by challenging our understanding of our societal prejudices with works that reflect on a reality that is, and show a reality that could be.
