The offer in the Dorotheum's auction ranges from early Austrian photography from the 1850s to pictorialism, Viennese studios of the 1930s, photographs from the environment of the Dadaists, reportage, actionism and contemporary photography.

Tilla Durieux (born Ottilie Godefroy, Vienna 1880-1971 Berlin) was a famous actress, a politically engaged figure, and is regarded as the most portrayed woman of her era. A photograph shows Auguste Renoir in front of Durieux’s portrait, which he executed in 1914 at the behest of her second husband, the famous art dealer Paul Cassirer.

Four photographs offered in the auction were taken in 1927 in the course of a reportage entitled "My Zoo", which shows Tilla Durieux in the company of her animals in her apartment on Kaiserin-Augusta Strasse in Berlin. Three more photographs of her animals and the "Fischzimmer" with a collection of African wood figures complete the zoo. All the photos of the actress were produced by Atelier Stone, which was located only a few houses away from Durieux’s apartment. Sasha Stone (born Aleksander Serge Steinsapir, St. Petersburg 1895-1940 Perpignan) ran his highly successful studio for reportage and advertising photography together with his wife, Cami Stone. He was a dazzling character and a globetrotter, who lived in Warsaw, New York and Paris before settling in Berlin and at last moving to Brussels. Originally trained as an electrician, he worked both in Thomas Edison’s laboratories and for the sculptor Hunt Diederich. During World War I, he joined the American army. After returning to Europe, he studied drawing, painting and sculpture in Paris.

A special highlight of the auction, which includes examples ranging from early travel photography to contemporary works, is an extremely rare first edition. It illustrates the most prominent Austrian nature print project, the "Physiotypia Plantarum Austriacarum", a collection of plants compiled by Constantin von Ettingshausen and Alois Pokorny, first presented in 1855. Ettingshausen was a professor of botany and natural history in Vienna from 1854 and used nature printing to illustrate his publications. This technique combined science and aesthetics and was intended to convey the innovative potential of the K.K. Hof- und Staatsdruckerei (the Imperial & Royal State Printing Office).

Das Angebot in der Auktion des Dorotheums reicht von früher österreichischer Fotografie aus den 1850er Jahren über Piktorialismus, Wiener Ateliers der 1930er Jahre, Aufnahmen aus dem Umfeld der Dadaisten, Reportage bis zu Aktionismus und zeitgenössischer Fotografie.

Tilla Durieux, (eig. Ottilie Godefroy, Wien 1880-1971 Berlin) gefeierte Schauspielerin, politisch engagierte Zeitgenossin, galt als meist portraitierte Frau ihrer Epoche. Eine Fotografie zeigt Auguste Renoir vor Durieux' Bildnis, welches er 1914 im Auftrag des berühmten Kunsthändlers Paul Cassirer, ihres zweiten Ehemannes, anfertigte.

Vier in der Auktion angebotenen Fotografien entstanden 1927 im Zuge einer "Mein Zoo" betitelten Reportage, die Tilla Durieux gemeinsam mit ihren Tieren in ihrer Wohnung in der Berliner Kaiserin-Augusta Straße zeigt. Drei weitere Aufnahmen ihrer Tiere bzw. des "Fischzimmers" mit einer Sammlung afrikanischer Holzfiguren machen den Zoo komplett. Sämtliche Fotos der Schauspielerin fertigte das Atelier Stone, das nur wenige Häuser von Durieux‘ Wohnung entfernt war. Sasha Stone (eig. Aleksander Serge Steinsapir, St. Petersburg 1895-1940 Perpignan), welcher gemeinsam mit seiner Frau Cami Stone das überaus erfolgreiche Atelier für Reportage und Werbefotografie führte, war ebenfalls eine schillernde Persönlichkeit. Der Weltenbummler lebte in Warschau, New York, Paris und Brüssel, bevor er sich in Berlin niederließ. Ausgebildet als Elektromonteur arbeitete er sowohl in den Laboratorien von Thomas Edison als auch bei dem Bildhauer Hunt Diederich. Während des ersten Weltkrieges trat er in die amerikanische Armee ein, zurück in Europa studierte er in Paris Zeichnen, Malerei und Bildhauerei.

Ein besonderes Highlight der Auktion, die Beispiele von der frühen Reisefotografie bis hin zu zeitgenössischen Arbeiten umfasst, ist eine äußerst seltene Erstausgabe. Sie stellt das prominenteste österreichische Naturselbstdruck-Projekt vor, die "Physiotypia Plantarum Austriacarum", eine erstmals 1855 präsentierte Pflanzensammlung, die von Constantin von Ettingshausen und Alois Pokorny erstellt wurde. Ettingshausen war ab 1854 Professor der Botanik und medizinischen Naturgeschichte in Wien und verwendete zur bildlichen Darstellung in seinen Publikationen den Naturselbstdruck. Dieses Verfahren vereinte Wissenschaft und Ästhetik und sollte das Innovationspotential der k.k. Staatsdruckerei vermitteln.
