The OstLicht Photo Auction is known for always providing a surprise with unexpected offers. But this is especially true for the spring auction taking place on Friday, 2 June. "We are pleased and proud to be able to offer works from one of the most important photo exhibitions of all times," says Peter Coeln, who founded the WestLicht Photo Auction in 2009 and has continued it as the OstLicht Photo Auction since 2020.

At the end of the 1980s, the Magnum photo agency had assembled the most impressive works from the first 40 years of its existence into a ground-breaking show of works entitled In Our Time. In addition to Henri Cartier-Bresson, Ernst Haas, Inge Morath, Erich Lessing, René Burri, Bruce Davidson and Sebastião Salgado, 50 other photographers are represented who have influenced the collective pictorial memory of this world with their iconic images.

"The exhibition is one of the most important milestones in the history of photography and comparable to Edward Steichen's masterpiece Family of Man”, says the former director of the photography department at Sotheby's Europe, Simone Klein, who joins the OstLicht team as an independent expert. "The fact that these historic exhibits are now being offered at an auction for the first time is truly a sensation".

Of particular interest to collectors: the set to be auctioned in the upcoming - and the two following - is the only one of the three produced at the time in which all works are signed by the photographers themselves, stamped by their estates or Magnum. In the first part, 97 large-format b/w or colour dye transfer prints will be offered:

• Henri Cartier-Bresson's world-famous portrait of Alberto Giacometti (starting price: €5,000) and his snapshot of two men peering through a fence at a crucial moment. (Starting price: € 3,000)
• The Dwarf, photographed by Bruce Davidson in his 1958 circus reportage. (Starting price: 5,000 €)
• The Dog Legs, with which Elliott Erwitt created the world's most famous advertising subject for boots in 1974. (Starting price: € 3,000)
• Inge Morath's portrait of Mrs. Eveleigh Nash and her chauffeur (Starting price: 3,000 €)
• Erich Lessing's most famous picture of Charles de Gaulle in Algeria in 1958 (Starting price: 2,000 €)

In addition to the Magnum highlights, the OstLicht spring auction features around 120 legendary classics as well as numerous interesting new discoveries. Among them:

• A vintage print of 'The Slap', in which Anton Giulio Bragaglia wanted to visualise the aesthetic value of traces of movement in 1912 using the example of a "slap in the face" - an extremely rare central work of Futurist photography of museum quality. (Starting price: € 18,000)
• A unique work by the painter Robert Rauschenberg, taken in 1987 with a 20x24- inch Polaroid camera. (Starting price: 12,000 €)
• An early signed dye transfer print by Ernst Haas, in which he transformed torn New York billboards into an autonomous colour composition. (Starting price: 5,000 €)

Die OstLicht Photo Auction ist dafür bekannt, immer wieder mit unerwarteten Angeboten für Aufsehen zu sorgen. Für die am Freitag, 2. Juni, stattfindende Frühjahrsauktion gilt das aber in besonderem Maße.

"Wir sind froh und stolz darauf, diesmal Werke aus einer der wichtigsten Fotoausstellungen aller Zeiten anbieten zu können", sagt Peter Coeln, der 2009 die WestLicht Fotoauktion gegründet hat und diese seit 2020 als OstLicht Photo Auction weiterführt.

Ende der 1980er Jahre hatte die Fotoagentur Magnum die prägendsten Werke aus den ersten 40 Jahren ihres Bestehens zu einer bahnbrechenden Werkschau mit dem Titel In Our Time zusammengestellt. Darin sind, neben Henri Cartier-Bresson, Ernst Haas, Inge Morath, Erich Lessing, René Burri, Bruce Davidson oder Sebastião Salgado, 50 weitere Fotografen und Fotografinnen vertreten, die mit ihren Bildikonen das kollektive Bildgedächtnis dieser Welt geprägt haben.

"Die Ausstellung ist einer der wichtigsten Meilensteine in der Geschichte der Fotografie und vergleichbar mit Edward Steichens Meisterwerk Family of Man", sagt die ehemalige Direktorin der Fotografie-Abteilung von Sotheby’s Europa, Simone Klein, die das Team von OstLicht als selbständige Expertin verstärkt. "Dass diese historischen Exponate nun erstmals in einer Auktion angeboten werden, ist wirklich eine Sensation".

Für Sammler besonders interessant: Das Set, das in der kommenden – und den zwei nachfolgenden – OstLicht Auktionen versteigert wird, ist das einzige der drei damals produzierten, in dem alle Werke von den Fotografen selbst signiert, von ihren Estates oder Magnum gestempelt wurden. Im ersten Teil werden 97 großformatige S/W oder Color Dye Transfer Prints ausgerufen:

• Henri Cartier-Bressons weltberühmtes Porträt von Alberto Giacometti (Startpreis: 5.000 €) und sein Schnappschuss, auf dem er zwei Männer im entscheidenden Augenblick beim Spähen durch einen Zaun festgehalten hat. (Startpreis: 3.000 €)
• The Dwarf, den Bruce Davidson 1958 in seiner Zirkus-Reportage porträtiert hat. (Startpreis: 5.000 €)
• Die Dog Legs, mit denen Elliott Erwitt 1974 das weltweit bekannteste Werbesujet für Stiefel schuf. (Startpreis: 3.000 €)
• Inge Moraths Porträt von Mrs. Eveleigh Nash und ihrem Chauffeur (Startpreis: 3.000 €)
• Erich Lessings berühmtestes Bild von Charles de Gaulle 1958 in Algerien (Startpreis: 2.000 €)

Neben den Magnum Highlights finden sich in der OstLicht Frühjahrsauktion noch weitere rund 120 legendäre Klassiker sowie zahlreiche interessante Neuentdeckungen. Darunter u.a.:

• Ein Vintageabzug von ‚The Slap‘, auf dem Anton Giulio Bragaglia 1912 den ästhetischen Wert von Bewegungsspuren am Beispiel einer "Ohrfeige" sichtbar machen wollte - ein extrem seltenes zentrales Werk der futuristischen Fotografie von musealer Qualität. (Startpreis: 18.000 €)
• Ein Unikat des Malers Robert Rauschenberg, das er 1987 mit einer 20x24-inch Polaroid-Kamera angefertigt hat. (Startpreis: 12.000 €)
