The Fotostiftung Schweiz (Schweizerische Stiftung für die Photographie), founded in 1971, is dedicated to the preservation, acquisition and presentation of photographic works. It administrates an archive and a collection which together contain over 50 photographic estates and around 50,000 original prints of work by outstanding photographers. The Fotostiftung organises exhibitions, issues publications on the history of Swiss photography and supports present-day photography in Switzerland by purchasing contemporary work. The collection of the Fotostiftung is supplemented by long-term loans from the Swiss Confederation and the internationally orientated collection of the Friends of the Fotostiftung Schweiz.
Together with the Fotomuseum Winterthur the Fotostiftung Schweiz also administrates a public library of approx. 20,000 volumes dealing with photography and participates with teaching assignments in the newly established program in the history and theory of photography at the University of Zurich.

Ihre Sammlung umfasst ca. 50'000 Ausstellungsprints, 250'000 Archivabzüge sowie über 1 Million Negative bzw. Dias. Der Schwerpunkt der Sammlung liegt auf der Schweizer Fotografie des 20. Jahrhunderts. Im Auftrag des Bundesamtes für Kultur betreut die Fotostiftung Schweiz auch die Archive oder Nachlässe herausragender FotografInnen und umfangreiche Fotografiebestände der Eidgenossenschaft. Mit eigenen Ausstellungen und Publikationen stellt die Fotostiftung Schweiz regelmässig historische oder aktuelle Positionen der Schweizer Fotografie vor. Die Fotostiftung Schweiz wird vom Bundesamt für Kultur, Bern, unterstützt.
Gemeinsam mit dem Fotomuseum Winterthur führt sie auch eine öffentliche Fachbibliothek mit ca. 20'000 Büchern zum Thema Fotografie und beteiligt sich innerhalb von Lehraufträgen am 2007 geschaffenen Studiengang Geschichte und Theorie der Fotografie an der Universität Zürich.
