Fireplace

24 Nov 2010 – 12 May 2011
November 24 Van Zoetendaal Gallery will open the exhibition Fireplaces by Johannes Schwartz. Johannes Schwartz (Munich, Germany, 1970) lives and works in Amsterdam. The photographs are abstractions, sometimes with a surrealist effect, hinting at what has been or was left behind. In 2007 he was awarded the Cobra Art Prize for the innova… more

Eva-Fiore Kovacovsky

The Factory

The Factory

3 Aug – 7 Sep 2007
The starting point of Eva-Fiore Kovacovsky (1980, Bern) to the project 'The Factory' was to build landscapes, based upon the feelings of places and situations she misses from her place of origin, Switzerland. The factory refers to pictures as considered beautiful, pictures showing nature in an idealized way for example hills shining in the first spring sun, lakes as transparent as glass and forests covered with freshsnow. Pictures showing ideals. Beautiful but harmless, you could interpret them … more

Versus and Believing is Seeing

Versus and Believing is Seeing

26 May – 1 Jul 2007
Versus, 2006-2007, Kyungwoo Chun

In his first color series 'Versus', 2006-2007, Kyungwoo Chun is investigating human relationships like he has done in his previous works such as 'One hour Portrait' or '30 minutes dialogue'.

'Versus' is inspired by the old chinese word 'ren' which looks like a walking person and has the meaning of 'human being'. This symbol was created out of the believe that no one can stand alone and that everybody needs someone to hold onto.

In 'Versus' people are asked … more

Las Vegas
14 April - 19 May 2007
Vernissage Saturday April 14th, 16h - 19h

Marjaana Kella

Blush

Blush

15 Apr – 21 May 2006
Marjaana Kella's works are based on an attempt to cut off the relationship between the photograph and the visible reality. She is also interested in questions like, What is seeing and perceiving? For example, the new work "Light" is an attempt to capture light as such, without a tangible object. We seldom come to think how the local colours are only secondary colours, reflections of colour within light. Local colours pick out the colours they represent from light, as in the series "Grey", in whi… more

David Renggli

Solo Exhibition

4 Mar – 9 Apr 2006
David Renggli (Zürich, 1974)

The artistic concept of David Renggli is based on the conviction that contemporary still life should be more than an obvious grouping of objects of the 'nature-morte'. His staged sculptural groupings of everyday objects exist both as installations, and as photographs of a reality that he puts at the center of discussion. In a subtle way these works confront one with questions like 'What is real? What is true?'. Renggli's universe is subversive and disrupts existing… more

Koos Breukel

Cosmetic View

Cosmetic View

7 Jan – 12 Feb 2006
Last year Koos Breukel has portrayed (partially) blind people, who visited the ocularist Erica Groet. An ocularist creates artificial eyes for people who miss one or two eyes. Both Breukel and Groet share a fascination for 'seeing'.

With this series Breukel aims at opening a discussion on prejudices regarding blindness. At first glance nothing is 'wrong' with these people: it's the viewer who does not 'see'.

Cosmetic View is available in book form (€ 25,-).more

Yuki Onodera

Transvest

Transvest

22 Oct – 29 Nov 2005
Onodera complicates and enriches her art by making presence and absence the dominating tension that runs through all her work.

The transvest series does not easily divulge its full power to please and provoke until after our eyes have adjusted to the darkness and our minds have started to churn. The shaped figures are selected for their evocative capacity, intended to give us a sense of 'déjà-vu.more

Holger Niehaus

Solo Exhibition

3 Sep – 9 Oct 2005
Is something wrong with Niehaus? Still lives? Although the themes are not unusual, the still lives of Niehaus differ from the traditional still lives in that any attempt to discover meaning is futile. His main goal is to focus the spectator on the photography or the subject of his images. Where there is no appeal to logic or experience, Niehaus leaves the spectator with wonder.
Death is ever imminent in these images, as in his recent image of a cut open fish. As if it were a marionet, it apparen… more

Leo Divendal

Waterfronts

Waterfronts

2 Mar – 3 Apr 2005
The sea, the harbour and the river play an important role in the photoworks of Leo Divendal (Heemstede, 1947). Endless variations of the horizon, often loved by a single ship, a cloud or a rock.

Within the broad spectrum of this theme, Waterfronts shows a new series of works about shifting. In Waterfronts even more than in previous projects, Divendal focuses on movement that is suggested by presenting connected works as a diptyches, triptyches or even a quintych. more

In 2003, Annaleen Louwes spent three months at 'Het Vijfde Seizoen'; an artists residence in Den Dolder, The Netherlands. Showground

Showground

10 Jan – 15 Feb 2004
Showground is a sequel to Modelstudies (2001) in which Kooiker refers to a wide variation of photographic styles. But unlike e.g. Breitner – who used photo's as a prestudy for his paintings – for Kooiker, these pictures of models in his studio are an end in itself. In an atmosphere where also studio-assets come to play a role, the viewer becomes a peeping tom.
