Artist Barbara Niggl Radloff (1936–2010), after spending her youth surrounded by the ruins of the Second World War, discovered photography, seeing in it the ideal medium to document the story of the people of post-war Munich and the stark reality of their lives. Niggl Radloff left behind an impressive body of work from her early career as a photojournalist and her many years spent creating portraits of artists. From Otto Dix to August Sander – Art of the 1920s

2 Oct 2020 – 2 May 2021

The exhibition illuminates a time of extremes and contrasts, an age full of hope and misery, light and shadows, which also awakes associations with the present. In the dialogue between painting and photography, the exhibition presents highlights of a culture, which was full of artistic innovations and which, at the same time, multiplied itself in the forerunners of the cultural decline during the Nazi regime. The modern style of "Neue Sachlichkeit" (New Objectivity) in painting and … more

Paragons Afterimages, the exhibition title refers to correlations between images, but also their production, referring to the connections between images and a method of using existing images to produce new ones. In the art schools of the 19th and early 20th centuries, photographs served as models or paragons and were employed purely for teaching purposes. Budding artists used photographic templates as important creative aids – they provided the model, in art classes, for the students&r… more

Since Edward Snowden’s disclosures, no-one has been in any doubt about the existence of widespread digital surveillance and monitoring. Automated analysis of electronic processes, events and communications is also employed to interpret people’s behavior in the "Internet of Things" and the mind-blowing world of "Big Data".

The role of museums, since their earliest days, has always been that of collecting, exhibiting and conserving art and cultural objects. In the 19th century, in particular, "successful collecting" involved bringing together objects of lasting relevance in a targeted yet comprehensive manner.
